Construction selector

Which construction actually suits your artwork?

Embroidered, woven and printed patches are not interchangeable. The table compares the three on surface texture, how much detail each one can hold, how they wear, and the artwork where each wins — including the cases where custom embroidered patches are the wrong call.

Compare Embroidered Woven Printed
Surface feel Raised, tactile thread with visible stitch direction Flat, fine-grain weave with a smooth hand Smooth, ink-fused surface
Detail ceiling Bold shapes, solid fills and lettering read best Holds finer linework, thin borders and small lettering Holds photographic art, gradients and wide colour blends
Durability profile Dense, precise stitching keeps colour vivid and resists wear Tight weave holds shape and resists fraying Depends on the base material and how the ink is bonded
Best-fit use Mascots, team crests, flags, emblems, name patches Fine logos, small type, detailed crests Photo-real artwork, event and simulator patches
Choose this if… You want depth, texture and a patch that ages slowly Your artwork carries fine lines or small type Your artwork is photographic or gradient-heavy

Honest trade-off: embroidery is the wrong choice for very fine hairline text, photographic gradients, or artwork built from hundreds of tiny isolated colour blocks. Woven or printed construction usually wins there. The narwhal mascot works in embroidery because its shapes are broad and its contrast is high — a tusk, teeth, scars and a stick silhouette rather than soft photographic shading.

Size & detail

Size, shape and what survives at each scale

Finished size is the single biggest lever on how much artwork detail survives. Fix the size before artwork sign-off, not after, because a bigger field means more stitch passes and more room for the detail you paid for.

What the reference patch proves at 3.8" × 3.1"

  • Small features still resolveThe gray tusk, sharp teeth and the brown hockey stick behind the head all read clearly at this size.
  • Contrast detail holdsWhite sewn scars with visible black stitching stay distinct against the bright and light blue ground.
  • Curves keep their shapeLayered blue shading and careful stitching carry the muzzle and fins without flattening.
  • Depth is built, not printedFully embroidered construction with layered shading produces the three-dimensional feel of the finished emblem.

Planning band for a finished patch

2.0" – 2.5" Compact emblems and badges. Keep shapes bold; avoid lettering and fine interior lines.
3.0" – 3.5" Single-line lettering and simple icons are workable. Simplify small interior details.
3.8" × 3.1" Reference footprint. A full mascot with tusk, teeth and scar stitching.
4.5" – 5.0" Multi-line lettering, layered shading and denser interior detail become practical.
6.0" and up Large crests, back-of-jacket emblems and complex multi-block scenes.

Quality control

Durability, claim by claim

Any embroidered patches manufacturer can promise longevity. What matters is which construction detail delivers it. Every claim below maps to a visible feature of the reference patch.

Buyer question Detail that answers it
Will the colour fade or rub away? Dense and precise stitching keeps thread colour vibrant and resists wear
Will the edge fray? Light blue merrowed (stitched) border with a reinforced edge designed to prevent fraying
Will the curves look flat? Layered blue shading and careful stitching across the muzzle and fins
Will fine contrast survive? White sewn scars with visible black stitching set against blue ground
Is there a layer that can lift? Fully embroidered construction in high-quality threads — the design is stitched, not laminated onto the surface

Scenario to specification

Pick the surface, then pick the attachment

The reference patch arrives with an iron-on backing for quick application and can alternatively be sewn on for a custom, tailored fit and extra durability. Use the surface you are decorating to decide which route to specify.

Surface or garment Suggested attachment Why it fits
Hockey jersey Sew-on Knit fabric flexes and launders often; stitching gives the tailored fit and extra durability the patch offers
Warm-up or denim jacket Iron-on, then sew-on for heavy rotation Heat-activated backing places quickly; stitching adds hold on garments worn hard
Hat or cap Iron-on Quick application on a small, stable panel where a press is easy to control
Sports bag, duffel or backpack Sew-on Gear that is handled daily benefits from the extra durability of a stitched attachment
Tote bag Iron-on Flat panel, fast placement, no stitch line to hide
Vintage find or DIY project Iron-on first Position it without a needle, then stitch it down if you want the tailored finish

Attachment guidance reflects how each surface is worn and laundered. Confirm the final method on your quote so the backing specified matches the garment you are decorating.
